Im Jahr 1999, als ich diese Seite ins Netz stellte, schien der Millennium Dom für London und das gesamte britische Königreich das ultimative Ereignis zur Begrüßung des neuen Jahrtausends zu sein. Aber schon bald zeigte sich, dass auf Grund falscher Erwartungen und teilweise chaotischer Organisation das ganze Spektakel zu einem Fiasko werden würde. So ziemlich jeder war froh als sich am 31.12.2000 die Tore des Millennium Doms schlossen. Keiner wußte so recht was man nun mit der teuren Flunder machen sollte. Man spricht sogar von Abriss. Hier aber jetzt die Geschichte wie ich sie damals schilderte:

In 1999, when I first published these pages in the Internet, the Millennium Dome seemed to be the ultimate start into the new millennium for both London and the whole UK. But it soon showed that expectations had been put to high and together with partly chaotic organisation the whole spectacle became a flop. Nearly everybody was glad when on Dec. 31st 2000 the doors at the Millennium Dome finally closed. Now nobody really knows what to do with the saucer. There is even talk of demolition. But here is the story as I told it at the time:

Das Jahr 2000 nähert sich und überall gibt es Pläne um dieses Jahrtausendereignis gebührend zu feiern. In London entsteht zu diesem Zweck zur Zeit die größte überdachte Halle der Welt. Um dieses über 2 Milliarden DM teure Bauwerk gibt es natürlich viele Kontroversen über die bereits an anderer Stelle viel zu lesen ist. Die technische Faszination dieses Kuppelbaus mit 350 Meter Durchmesser und 50 Meter Höhe ist allerdings unbestritten und deshalb auch diese Seite mit einigen Fotos die am 3. August 1998 entstanden. Ende November 1998 erhielt der Millennium Dome eine wichtige Finanzspritze von vier Gesellschaften. Dem Mittelpunkt der britischen Millennium-Feierlichkeiten fehlten bis dato rund 150 Million Pfund privater Sponsoren zur Ausgestaltung der inneren Ausstellungsflächen. Von "Boots the Chemist" gab es £12 Millionen für die "Body Zone" während GEC und BAe (Elektronik and Ingenieurwesen) jeder £6 Millionen für die "Mind Zone" bereitstellten. McDonalds unterstützt mit £12 Millionen die tägliche Unterhaltungsshow "Our Town Story". Insgesamt wird es 14 thematisierte Zonen geben, für einige stehen die Sponsoren bereits fest: BT (Kommunikation), BA and BAA (Reise), Tesco (Lernen), Manpower (Arbeiten), Ford (Mobilität) and Marks&Spencer (Nationale Identität).

The year 2000 is not far away and all around the planet plans are ripe to celebrate this millennium experience. In London at the moment the biggest hall of the world is being build for this occasion. There is of course a lot of controversy over this £758 million building. You can read about this on other pages. The technical faszination of this 350 metre diameter 50 metre high dome however is catching and therefore I started this page with some photographs taken on August 3rd 1998. There are hardly any other photographs of the dome as it looks presently on the internet. Detailed information about the project however you can find on the official Millenium Dome page.
At the end of November 1998 the Millennium Dome received a major cash boost as four companies pledged £36 million to keep the Greenwich project on target. The centrepiece of Britain's millennium celebrations had been struggling with a £50 million shortfall in private sponsorship to fill the Dome. Boots the Chemist has given £12 million to sponsor the "Body Zone" while GEC and BAe (electronic and enginerring) are each giving £6 million towards the "Mind Zone". McDonalds has donated £12 million to stage the daily pageant "Our Town Story". Alltogether the Dome will have 14 themed zones, some of which are sponsored by BT (communicate), BA and BAA (travel), Tesco (learn), Manpower (work), Ford (mobility) and Marks&Spencer (national identity).
