17. September 2005	Das wohl traditionsreichste Treffen für Seesenderfreunde findet alljährlich in Calais statt. Selbst die Organisatoren wissen nicht genau wie lange es diese Veranstaltung schon gibt. Aber es dürften deutlich mehr als dreißig Jahre sein. Nach vier Jahren Pause (hier mein Bericht über Euroradio 2001) konnte ich jetzt wieder einmal teilnehmen. France Radio Club/Offshore Echo's Magazin hatten es wieder einmal geschafft ein interessantes Programm zusammenzustellen. Natürlich ist dies nur durch die Zusammenarbeit und den persönlichen Einsatz der verschiedenen ehrenamtlichen Helfer, insbesondere François Lhote, Boudewijn Dom, Robert Magniez und Chris Edwards möglich. Chris war krankheitsbedingt nicht anwesend, die übrigen Helfer sollen hier auch einmal im Bild vorgestellt werden:	The yearly Euroradio event for offshore radio enthusiasts at Calais can look back at a long tradition. Even the organizers don't know for sure for how many years this meeting has taken place. But it must have been going on for more than thirty years now. After a break of four years (see my report about Euroradio 2001) I was once again able to be present. France Radio Club/Offshore Echo's Magazine had managed once again to put together an interesting agenda. Of course this is only possible by cooperation and personal involvment of the various voluntary helpers. These are in particular François Lhote, Boudewijn Dom, Robert Magniez and Chris Edwards. Due to illness Chris was not able to attend Euroradio 2005 but the other members of the team I would like to show you here:	September 17th 2005

	Wie auch schon im letzten Jahr fand die Veranstaltung in einem kleinen Konferenzraum des Hotels Georges V, im Herzen Calais gelegen, statt. Die Podiumsgäste kamen dieses Mal alle aus England und hatten in den 60er und 70er Jahren auf den Seesendern vor England gearbeitet. Paul Graham, ebenfalls ein bekannter Name der britischen Radioszene, startete pünktlich um 14 Uhr die Interviewrunde mit Mark Sloane und John Aston.	As in the previous years the venue for Euroradio 2005 was the small conference room at the Georges V. hotel in the heart of Calais. This time all guest speakers were British and came across the channel. In the 60's and 70's they all had worked on the offshore stations off the British coast. At two o'clock sharp Paul Graham, a familiar name from the Britsh radio szene as well, started the interviews with Mark Sloane and John Aston.

	Mark und John starteten beide ihre Karriere bei Radio 390, Mark wechselte später zu Caroline South bevor es ihn für einige Zeit auf die Insel zu Radio Antilles verschlug. Heimweh brachte ihn zurück nach England zu Radio 355 und Caroline North. Ein Angebot der BBC schlug er aus da die strikte Reglementierung des Programmablaufs nicht seinem Stil entsprach. Heute arbeitet Mark Sloane in der Werbeindustrie. Die Stationen John Astons nach Radio 390 lauteten Radio Essex, Caroline North und South, Radio 270 und Radio 355. John produziert heute Spezialeffekte für die Filmindustrie. Während John bereits im vergangenen Jahr bei einem britischen Seesendertreffen auf der Bühne stand (und von seiner Nichte als Star bewundert wurde) trat Mark nach langer Zeit erstmals wieder in Seesenderkreisen auf. Mit seinen Fragen zielte Paul Graham weniger darauf ab einen lückenlosen Lebenslauf seiner Interviewpartner zu erhalten als die damaligen Lebensumstände bei den verschiedenen Sendern darzustellen. Und da konnten Mark Sloane und John Aston eine Reihe interessanter und amüsanter Anekdoten zum Besten geben.	Mark and John both started their career with Radio 390, later Mark changed to Caroline South before he ended up on an island for some time with Radio Antilles. Homesickness brought him back to Britain and Radio 355 and later Caroline North. He declined a job offer from the BBC as the stringent programming restrictions were not the way he liked to do things. Nowadays Mark Sloane works in the advertising industry. John Astons stations following Radio 390 were Radio Essex, Caroline North and South, Radio 270 and Radio 355. Nowadays John produces film industry special effects. While John already came onto the stage at a British offshore radio meeting last year (and was admired by his niece as a star) it was a long time ago for Mark that he last mingled with offshore radio enthusiasts. Paul Grahams questions were not essentially aimed at obtaining a complete life story but to get an idea of the varying circumstances of the life on the various radio stations. And Mark Sloane and John Aston really could tell some amusing anecdotes.

	Nach einer längeren Pause lud Paul Graham Roger Matthews nach vorne. Er arbeitete von 1976 bis 1979 bei Radio Caroline, versuchte danach vergeblich einen eigenen Seesender zu starten und hatte später einen Sender in Irland und im Mittleren Osten. Nach seinen eigenen Worten wurden diese Stationen aber überwiegend von Schafen bzw. Wüstenkamelen gehört. Heute beschäftigt er sich hauptsächlich mit seiner Firma die Dienstleistungen und Schulungen im Bereich der Luftfahrt anbietet.	Following a long break Paul Graham invited Roger Matthews to the front. From 1976 through to 1979 Roger worked for Radio Caroline. Then he attempted to start his own offshore station in vain. But eventually he had a radio station in Ireland and later in the Middle East. But according to his own words mainly sheep or desert camels respectively were listening to those stations. At the moment he runs an aviation support and training company.

	Zum Erstaunen aller, insbesondere der Organisatoren selbst, war man noch immer im geplanten Zeitablauf. Damit das auch so blieb ging es bereits nach einer kurzen Pause mit dem letzten Gast des Tages, Dick Palmer weiter. Er schilderte Paul Graham und den inzwischen auf fast 40 Personen angestiegenen Zuhörern seine Zeit als Techniker bei Radio Essex und wie er innerhalb einer Woche vom Handlanger zum Stationsmanager avancierte. Eine Zeit lang arbeitete er für Pink Floyd als Roadmanager ehe er in den 70er Jahren auf der Mi Amigo vor der holländischen Küste wieder bei einem Seesender auftauchte. Wie auch seine Vorredner ist Dick viel in der Welt herumgekommen. Unter anderem arbeitete er für den Sultan von Oman. Heute hat er seine eigene Ingenieurfirma in Sussex.	Astounding for everybody, especially the organizers themself the schedule was still running within the planned timetable. To keep it that way there was only a short break before the last guest of the day, Dick Palmer, was interviewed by Paul Graham. He told him and the audience (which in the meantime had risen to nearly forty people) about his time as technician at Radio Essex and how he had risen from the odd-job man to manager of the station within one week. For a while he worked as road manager for Pink Floyd before he once again got involved with offshore radio and joined Radio Caroline off the Dutch coast in the early 70's. Just as the other guests on this day Dick Palmer is a well travelled man. Among other things he has worked for the Sultan of Oman. Now he is running an engineering company in Sussex.

	Mit nur geringer Verspätung endete die Veranstaltung gegen 18:30 Uhr. Wieder einmal war es ein unterhaltsamer Nachmittag für den sich auch eine längere Anreise gelohnt hat. Neben Franzosen fanden auch Besucher aus Belgien und Großbritannien den Weg nach Calais. Während die Zahl von 25 Teilnehmern (einschließlich der Organisatoren) zu Beginn der Veranstaltung etwas enttäuschte, hatten sich bis zum Ende doch zufriedenstellende 39 Personen im Hotel Georges V eingefunden. Dabei war es für eine Gruppe von Briten, durch einen Stau und verspätete Fähren aufgehalten, unerheblich, dass sie lediglich das letzte Drittel der Veranstaltung mitbekamen. Denn es folgte noch das übliche spezielle gemeinsame Abendessen mit ausreichend Zeit für ausführliche Gespräche. Außerdem zahlt sich, zumindest für die britischen Besucher, der Trip nach Calais durch die deutlich günstigeren Preise für Spirituosen auch finanziell aus. Die Ehefrau eines französischen Teilnehmers kam zum Ende der Veranstaltung mit mehreren überquellenden Einkaufstüten verschiedener Designermarken zurück. Auch für sie hatte sich der Trip nach Calais gelohnt.	Just slightly late Euroradio 2005 ended at around 6:30 pm. Once again it had been an interesting and entertaining afternoon. Even a long jorney had been worth one's while. Not only French people but also visitors from Belgium and Britain had made their way to Calais. At the beginning there were disappointing 25 participants - including the organizers. But towards the end the number of people that had found the way to the Georges V. hotel had risen to a satisfying 39. One group of Britons, delayed by a traffic jam and ferries running late, didn't mind to catch only the last third of the event. As usual later in the evening the special Euroradio dinner with fine French cuisine took place. Once again there was plenty of time to have extensive talks. And especially the British visitors benefited from a trip to Calais financially as well. On the continent the spirits are much cheaper than on the other side of the channel. Towards the end of the event a wife of a Frenchman came back from a shopping spree with lots of overflowing bags bearing the signs of various designer labels. She as well had benefited from the trip to Calais.
