	MERLIN NETWORK ONE
Mein Besuch in den Studios von Merlin Network One im Herzen Londons am 31. März 1999.		My visit to the studios of Merlin Network One in the heart of London on March 31st 1999.


	Nach dem Start 1998 in provisorischen Studios konnte Merlin Network One im Frühjahr 1999 in brandneue Studios umziehen. Es gibt zwei identische, hochmoderne Studios die im Keller eines Bürohochhauses in der Londoner City untergebracht sind. Das Bild oben zeigt Studio 1 in dem Country Music Radio seine Programme live produziert.	Following the use of temporary studios in 1998 Merlin Network One finally moved to its new studios in spring 1999. There are two identical high class studios, situated in the basement of an office building just off the London City. The photograph above shows studio 1 from which Country Music Radio goes live on air.

Das Mischpult ist zweigeteilt, wobei der linke Teil die Zuspielgeräte (MD, CD, etc) steuert, während am rechten Pult die Mikrofone und eingehende Telefonleitungen kontrolliert werden. Am Monitor in der Mitte kann der vorprogrammierte Programmlauf abgelesen werden. Neben dem Aufbau mit drei MD- und zwei CD-Spielern befinden sich unter dem Studiotisch noch ein Doppel-Kassettendeck, ein DAT-Spieler, sowie Verstärker und diverse Steuer- und Kontrollgeräte. The Mixer is divided into two parts. The left console controls MD- and CD-players while the console on the right fades the microphones and incoming telephone lines. The monitor in the middle shows the pre-programmed schedule. The rack on top of the table houses three MD- and two CD-players. Under the studio table there are a double cassette deck, a DAT player, an amplifier and several control units.

Im Studio zwei produziert Stationsmanager Eric Wilsher zusammen mit dem für den technischen Ablauf zuständigen Chris England einmal wöchentlich sein Medienprogramm "Media-Zoo". Neben dem Media-Zoo kommt nur die Sendung von Country Music Radio live aus dem Studio. Alle anderen Programme sind vorproduziert und werden computergesteuert eingespielt. Once a week station manager Eric Wiltsher uses studio two to produce his "Media-Zoo" show supported by Chris England who his reponsible for the technical side of the station. Besides Media-Zoo only the programme of Country Music Radio comes life from the studio. All other programmes are pre-recorded. Computer controlled they are played at the scheduled time.

MNO vermietet seine Sendezeit stundenweise an interessierte Organisationen. Das angelieferte Tonmaterial wird als Computerdatei gespeichert und ist so im direkten Zugriff des computergesteuerten Programmablaufs. Da einzelne Programme mehrmals zeitversetzt wiederholt werden, sind für den technischen Betriebsablauf lediglich zwei Leute notwendig. Neben Chris England ist dies Keith Lewis (Bild oben). Die aktuellen Programmdaten werden ständig am Monitor angezeigt. Einmal eingespeist, erfolgt der Programmablauf automatisch, so daß die Station in den Nachtstunden und am Wochenende nicht besetzt sein muß. Selbst Live-Programme werden vom Rechner gesteuert. So wird z. B. das Studio zur festgelegten Zeit ein- und auch wieder ausgeschaltet. Neben dem Hauptrechner im Büro steht auch in jedem Studio ein Computer von denen im Notfall jeder einzelne den Stationsbetrieb aufrecht erhalten kann. MNO is renting out its airtime to interested organisations on a hourly basis. All programmes are converted and saved as computer files making a fully computerised system possible. Programmes are repeated during the course of a day. Thus only two people (Chris England and Keith Lewis) can handle the technical side of MNO. All currently relevant data is shown on the monitor. Once all the programmes are converted to files the station runs automaticaly. During the night and over the weekend the station can even run unmanned. Even live-programmes are controlled by the computer: the studio is switched online and offline at the programmed times. Besides the main computer in the office there is a computer in each of the two studios. The computers are identical and in an emergency one computer could run the whole station.
