Radio Carolines 40th Birthday Party | |||
| 11. April 2004 | Die offizielle Geburtstagsparty von Radio Caroline fand in der Riga Music Bar in Westcliff-on-Sea (bei Southend) statt. Rund 200 Freunde und Macher der Station (darunter auch sechs Gäste aus Deutschland) versammelten sich seit dem späten Vormittag um diesen runden Geburtstag ausgiebig zu feiern. Während der Veranstaltung hatte man reichlich Gelegenheit alte Bekannte wiederzutreffen und mit den DJ's von Radio Caroline zu sprechen. | The official Radio Caroline birthday party took place at the Riga Music Bar at Westcliff-on-Sea (near Southend). About 200 friends and personnel of the station (including six guests from Germany) started gathering from late afternoon onwards to celebrate four decades of Radio Caroline. During the course of the day there where ample opportunities to meet old friends and mingle with disc jockeys of the station. | April 11th 2004 |

Trotz Krankheit läßt es sich Tony Allen nicht nehmen zum 40. Geburtstag von Radio Caroline zu erscheinen. Nach wie vor meldet er sich vehement zu Wort. Leider war dies sein letzter öffentlicher Auftritt vor seinem Tod am 9. Juli 2004.

Despite illness and pain Tony Allen wanted to take part in the celebrations for Carolines 40th birthday. He still talked impassioned about the things that bothered him. Sadly this was his last public appearance before his death on July 9th 2004.

| Tony Allen, von schwerer Krankheit genesen aber immer noch gezeichnet war Teil einer Bühnen-Interview-Runde. In seiner unverwechselbaren Art unterhielt er das Publikum, so dass seine Bemerkung, nun endlich legal auf Morphium zu sein, mit Heiterkeit quittiert wurde. Danach überließ man die Bühne Roger "Twiggy" Day (sein Motto: growing old disgracefully - schmachvoll alt werden) der aus dem Stegreif eine One-Man-Show präsentierte die für einen Lacher nach dem anderen sorgte. Eine Zuhörerin erlitt einen ernsthaften Lachkrampf aber dies und auch der dezente Hinweis auf den Zeitplan konnten ihn nicht stoppen - sein zehnminütiger Schlusssatz hätte auch gerne doppelt so lange dauern können. | Tony Allen, with improved health but still marked by his serious illness of course had to go on stage to join the interview as well. With his unmistakable kind of humour he could discuss even serious topics and still entertain the audience. As such he told us that he is happy that he finally is allowed to be legally on morphine. Following the interview Roger "formerly Twiggy" Day (his motto: growing old disgracefully) was allowed to take over the stage. His one man show - despite some serious thoughts - produced laugh after laugh. One lady even had a laughing fit but neither this or a discreet hint as to the timetable could't stop Roger. His last sentence went on for ten minutes and the audience wouldn't have minded if it had been even longer.. |

| Zwischen den einzelnen Interviews und anderen Bühnenaktionen gab es natürlich auch viel Gelegenheit sich mit alten und neuen Freunden zu unterhalten und zu fachsimpeln. Zur musikalischen Untermalung legte Roger Day auf und da wir uns ja in Rigas Music Bar befanden gab es auch ausreichend Gelegenheit die Kehle anzufeuchten. | Between the various interviews and other stage actions there were of course many opportunities to talk to old and new friends and exchange the latest gossip. Roger Day played some music to keep us entertained and as everything took place at Rigas Music Bar there was no risk that your throat would dry out.. |

Ganz gleich wohin man schaute - es gab immer bekannte Gesichter unter den vielen Teilnehmern. Z.B. Albert und Georgina Hood, zwischen ihnen Jerry Wright, im Hintergrund Tony Allen und auch Martin Fisher ist zu erkennen.

| Der Abend stand dann ganz im Zeichen von Live-Musik: Nach der Vorgruppe "The Roosters" (gut gemachter Rock-Soul-Mix) betraten die legendären "Fortunes" die Bühne. Ihr Titel "Caroline" ist die Erkennungsmelodie von Radio Caroline und so war diese Band natürlich der passende Schlusspunkt für einen gelungenen Abend. Die mit viel Spielfreude vorgeführte Show brachte alte, aber auch neue und aktuelle Titel der vier Musiker die alle Zuhörer mitriss. Dann - kurz vor Mitternacht - erreichte die Spannung ihren Höhepunkt und die Fortunes spielten für alle Fans ihren Titel "Caroline". Für die Fortunes selbst gehört "Caroline" nicht zu den favorisierten Titeln und ist schon seit ewigen Zeiten nicht mehr Bestandteil ihrer Bühnenshow. Für diesen besonderen Anlass hatten sie extra einige Proben angesetzt um diesen Titel überhaupt vortragen zu können. Einen passenderen Abschluss dieser Zwölf-Stunden-Party gab es wohl kaum und so trennte man sich nur ungern um den teilweise langen Heimweg anzutreten. | Following the afternoon events it was live music for the evening. First "The Roosters" took to the stage and played a good rock-soul-mix. They played quite well but of course everybody was waiting for "The Fortunes". Their song "Caroline" is the signature tune for Radio Caroline. So this was a well planned finish to a brilliant day. The Fortunes played old as well as new songs and the sparkle in their eyes showed that they still enjoy making music after all these years. At last - shortly before midnight - the tension reached its climax and the Fortunes played for all friends of Radio Caroline their song "Caroline". The Fortunes themselves do not count "Caroline" as one of their best songs and for a long time this song isn't part of their stage presentation. For this special occasion they had done some additional rehearsals to be able to perform this song. A more fitting end to this twelve hour party was hardly imaginable. Reluctantly and slowly everybody parted and went on their (somtimes very long) way home. |
